5 Helpful Tips on Practicing Faith in the Professional World

Many Christians are familiar with the greatest commandments in the Bible, explained by Christ in Matthew 22:37-40: “Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (NIV)

We are called to be changed by God’s love for us and to love Him in return, as well as showing that love to others. However, it is one thing to understand your calling as a Christian, and it is another thing to put it into practice. As humans we are broken and sinful, and living out our faith on a day to day basis can be difficult. This is especially true in the professional world, where money, ambition, risk, competition, and other business-driven factors can make it easy to put faith on the backburner. It can be tempting to get caught up in the busyness of life and lose focus on what is important.

Faith, however, can still be the center of your life, even in difficult circumstances. Here are some helpful tips to help you actively practice your faith in the professional world:

  1. Do not be afraid. It can be easy to get overwhelmed working in a fast-paced business environment. Keep Isaiah 41:10 close at hand, which reads, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” God will be there through trials and difficult situations to help you through.
  2. Remember who defines you. In the workplace, it is easy to let success and fame define you. A person’s value according to society often relies on how much money they have earned, who they know, and how many awards they’ve won. God, however, has defined us differently. God calls us His children, beloved and worthy in His eyes, not because of anything we have done, but because of what Christ has done for us. It is important to remember this truth, no matter how successful you are.
  3. Spend time with God. Keeping up appearances as a professional takes an enormous amount of work, which can keep your schedule full and stress-inducing. It is important to take time in your day to be with God to reset your perspective from an earthly one to an eternal one.
  4. Stay motivated for the right reasons. Colossians 3:17 reads, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Even though sometimes our work on earth might seem like it is geared towards pleasing ourselves, we are called to do everything for the glory of God.
  5. Pray for your coworkers. While it might seem like the competitive atmosphere you live in makes relationships with your coworkers difficult, it is important to form relationships where you can. There will likely be people in your circle of influence that do not know the love of Christ, and you have a unique opportunity to show it to them. Spend some time asking God to change their lives like He has changed yours.

As C.S. Lewis famously remarked, “Faith is the art of holding on to things in spite of your changing moods and circumstances.” Being a Christian in the professional world can be difficult, but it is certainly possible if you allow God to work through you.
